WTM London - Diversity & Inclusion Summit: Empowering Workforces through Representation and Cultural Understanding

Attending the World Travel Market (WTM) was an enriching experience, particularly as I focused on the 'Elevate' panel discussion centred around "Empowering Workforces through Representation & Cultural Understanding." As a significant event for both industry professionals and potential travellers, WTM not only offered thought-provoking discussions but also provided its own immersive experience. It effectively facilitated solutions, addressing the important questions aligned with the objectives of the individuals and organisations currently shaping the ever-evolving global travel and hospitality landscape.

Representation & Culture

The allure of this event was not only as a result of the insightful speakers and engaging topics but in the promise of fresh perspectives, fostering connections, and contributing to the ongoing narrative of diversity and inclusion in the industry. The ‘Elevate’ panel discussion featured experts such as Atlyn Forde, Katie Brinsmead-Stockham, and Thea Bardot, moderated by brand and marketing manager, Jaime-lee Abtar. The panel explored the intricate navigation between representation and cultural understanding. Atlyn's insights into diversity and inclusion, Katie's perspectives on the hospitality sector, and Thea's experiences in travel recruitment added depth and nuance to each of their conversations and enriched the quality of the perspectives that each provided.

The heart of the discussion was the role of diverse teams in fostering authentic connections with customers. The panel delved into practical steps, understanding that showcasing commitment to diversity extends beyond rhetoric—transparent websites, impactful marketing, and tangible actions were at the forefront of solution-oriented discussions, addressing impacts that all organisations should consider.

Adaptive Workplaces

The evolving landscape of work structures, especially the surge in work-from-home and hybrid roles, sparked lively conversations. Each speaker offered unique perspectives on adaptability and approaches, echoing the sentiment that flexibility is key in catering to the diverse needs of a modern workforce. However, despite the progress made, the collective recognition was that the industry still has strides to make when fully embracing diversity and inclusion practices. This acknowledgment fuelled not just dialogue but a shared commitment to guide our clients towards more inclusive practices and ensure staff are trained to overcome barriers within their language or actions that could disturb workplace communities.

It became clear that the discussions prioritising wellness and mental health within the workplace seamlessly aligned with Communicate Inclusively's ethos. The emphasis on creating environments that are “not just diverse” but also “safe” and “supportive” was echoed as a priority. Each organisation, through the panellists’ own experiences, commented on their commitment to fostering a workplace where every individual can feel secure and valued, regardless of age, religion, gender, race, and sexual orientation.

What Can be Done?

As the panel delved into optimising recruitment strategies and the importance of understanding an organisation’s stakeholders, it became clear of the role we all have in actively promoting inclusive workplaces. The discussion turned to cultivating an inclusive company culture, particularly in the diverse landscape of London. How can we all display “what about your culture is inclusive,” and from a managerial perspective, find things of interest or “things that matter to you and your employees”?

The WTM served as motivation for reflection, inspiration and a renewed commitment to championing diversity and inclusion within the travel and hospitality industry. The event not only shed light on the challenges but also provided a roadmap for organisations, including Communicate Inclusively, to actively contribute to a more inclusive and welcoming landscape.
