Racial equality in the workplace is a critical issue that has been a prominent topic for discussions since the murder of George Floyd. Despite progress being made in areas, racial disparities and discrimination continue to exist in many workplaces. As a result, creating a diverse and inclusive work environment where all employees feel valued and respected is vital for both the well-being of employees and the success of the business.

In 2018 the ‘Race to work Charter’ was established to address underrepresentation of ethnic groups in senior roles in the workplace. Its aim is to overcome barriers to career progression for these groups. And then in 2019, the UK government set a voluntary target for public sector organisations to increase representation of ethnic groups by 10% within a year. 

Having representation of diverse ethnic groups in the workforce can create a more inclusive and discrimination-free work environment, promoting acceptance and belonging. Without representation, employees may feel that the culture is less inclusive and that they are undervalued in their positions.

Strategies for creating racial equality in the workplace

  • Establishing diversity and inclusion policies that promote equal opportunities and treatment for all employees.

  • Educating employees on unconscious bias, diversity, and inclusion to create a more understanding and accepting workplace culture.

  • Providing training and resources to managers and supervisors to promote diversity and prevent discrimination.

  • Encouraging open communication and providing channels for employees to report discrimination and have their concerns addressed.

  • Regularly measuring and analysing the diversity of the workplace and making changes as needed to promote inclusivity and diversity.

  • Implementing recruitment and hiring practices that are fair and unbiased, and attracting a wide pool of candidates from different backgrounds.

  • Promoting diversity in leadership positions and providing equal opportunities for career advancement.

  • Creating a workplace culture that values and celebrates differences, and fosters a sense of belonging for all employees.

  • Holding employees accountable for upholding diversity and inclusion policies and promoting equality in the workplace.

Creating a culture of allyship in the workplace can also make a positive change, this is when individuals support and advocate for marginalised groups who experience discrimination, bias and prejudice. They advocate for equitable policies and practices that promote inclusion and equity.

  • Groups feel more socially engaged, provoking more creativity and innovation when it comes to decision making and problem solving in teams or group projects.

  • Your organisation becomes more attractive to a wider range of candidates. Further engagement with diverse cultures has a positive impact on recruitment and helps to strengthen underrepresented communities.
